Abstract:

Contains mostly correspondence and notes of Frederic M. De Witt concerning Joaquin Miller's legacy and a proposed purchase of Miller's home and property by the city of Oakland, California for the creation of Joaquin Miller Park. Includes two letters from the mayor of Oakland, Frank K. Mott, expressing his strong interest in the proposal. Includes one handwritten letter by Joaquin Miller and one partial typescript of an article by Miller about Bret Harte that was eventually published in The New York Times Saturday Review. Includes one letter from Mrs. Joaquin Miller and several from various other correspondents concerning aspects of publishing Miller's works. Some transcripts and partial transcripts of the items are included in the collection. Also includes a Children's Chapel of Fruitdale, California certificate bearing a lithograph portrait print of Miller, and correspondence concerning various exhibitions held after Miller's death of his books and photographs
